Sooner or later each of us thinks about eternal things. A lot of clever, foolish, great and funny films about sense of life are shot. There is neither pathos nor reclamation in «Stone». It seems like a man with a camera was behind each of heroes some time and shot a few days from life of every character. Heroes are very realistic in this picture.

There are no negative characters; also there are no positive characters. There are ordinary people, who can be strong and weak, honest with others and can lie to themselves, they can do good and bad things, but everybody wants to find sense of life. An igniter, a functionary, an unhappy wife of functionary are looking for God or faith. They are looking for something, what they can catch on and find a fulcrum.

Stone is not only criminal, swindler and manipulator like every prisoner, who wants to go out from prison before the appointed time. He wants to get to the freedom so much that he devises a cunning plan according to his opinion with participation of his wife. Simultaneously he tries to affect the prison functionary Jack by method of cordial conversations. And ultimately he just wants silence. A prison cacophony makes him crazy. And he finds his God not in the repentance and total mercifulness – he learns to hear.

Lucetta (Stone’s wife) is a real chameleon. She is a beautiful young woman, who visits her husband 8 years regularly. She supports him and reacts quietly and with a smile on all his pessimistic remarks. She consents to help her husband to get free and tempts Jack, but she does it not because of love to her husband.

Jack is a prison functionary. It is necessary to sympathize him, but it is difficult to do. We do not know anything about him for sure. Besides, when he was young, he already was unhappy. Why? It is impossible to understand. A decent family man, parishioner and executive employee finds out that his life is empty and ordinary before retiring.

Jack is married, but it is impossible to call their couple happy. There is work, but there is no pleasure of it. There is belief in God, but this last point becomes an empty phrase. To return thanks before meal becomes like to wash hands. To listen to orthodox broadcast in the car is like to turn on the music for not being bored along the way to work.

Madylyn is a Jack’s wife. She is unhappy. Because she did not accomplish thing she intend toi do – she did not leave her husband. She tries to find a consolation in the faith. Her daily reading of the Bible after glass of wine makes a sad smile. But Madylyn does it with such serious and heartfelt face, that it is impossible to laugh, only sad smile appears because her faith is just a mask.

A subject of «Stone» is simple. Condemned on life imprisonment Gerald Krisson by nickname Stone (Edward Norton) uses the last chance to have freedom, using his beautiful wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich). She tempts an officer Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro), who examines the deal of her husband pre-term release and has to hand down the final verdict. Stone is far away from repentance, insuperable desire to have freedom as quicker as it is possible rules him only.

Jack understands it, but he does not understand motives of his game.

There are deception, temptation, betrayal, blackmail, lie, doubts, psychological game and hard moral choice in the film.

Jack turns out a pawn in this game and he does not wish to have such position. Attempts to get out of this situation and to save his honor and dignity draw him into decoy deeper and deeper.

«Stone» is obligatory for watching if you like Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Milla Jovovich.

Perfect play of great Hollywood actors, who play the main roles and good job of operator can be ascribed to the undoubted pluses of this picture. Despite the protagonist is a killer and a scene of action is an American correctional institution it is possible to get pleasure of the picture. Musical insertions supplement the picture rather successful.

«Stone» is a such noncommercial project with the stars of the global value in avant-garde. A place in the history of cinema and transcendental cash are not expected, but it will find its viewer for sure. The purpose of this picture is to give wide expanse for disputes and discussions. It is not extremely stereotype and it touches the strikingly spectrum of problems.

A picture can be interpreted variously. It is possible to think about it unambiguously. The lovers of «other» cinema will see something higher things in the film. But maybe someone will regret about spent time.

So, what is this picture about? Let everyone find his own answer.
